Well, hello again, Dolls! It’s Meegan, of the blog SignedM., and today I’m getting personal with you… today, I’m sharing with you about something I struggle with every. single. day: oily skin.

Yep, the struggle is real, dolls and it’s one I’ve been fighting since high school. “You’re actually lucky,” I’ve been told, “oily skin ages much better than dry skin!” Tell that to my giant pores and my battle with breakouts and blackheads. Yuck.

It’s safe to say I’ve tried just about every cleanser, toner, oil, lotion, primer and mask on the market to find what works best for me. And today, I’m sharing with you the DOs and DON’Ts of my oily skin care regimen.

On Cleansing…

DO: Wash your face every morning and every night.

DON’T: Use a gel cleanser. I need something with a little bit of “grit” to it… I need the exfoliation factor to help dig deep and clean deeper.

Product Suggestions:

Dermologica Dermal Clay Cleanser. Deep-cleansing clay formula purifies oily skin. Water-soluble Kaolin and Green clays combine with purifying extracts of Sambucus, Ivy and Lemon to remove excess oils and refine the skin's texture. Calming Cucumber and Sage soothe, while refreshing Menthol revitalizes even the most tired skin. *Think of your clay based cleanser as helping to mop up excess oil on your skin’s surface* (via Dermologica.)

And About Exfoliating…

DO: Exfoliate regularly. Every day, in fact… just make sure you are using a product that is designed for daily use. Exfoliation delivers a tighter, firmer, smoother look and feel of skin.

DON’T: Believe the myths that oil can be controlled by stripping the skin with harsh, drying ingredients such as alcohol. And, DON’T over exfoliate. Over-exfoliation triggers the inflammatory response, leading to a compromised lipid barrier that won’t function properly, a sensitized skin condition, and accelerated premature aging. Again, make sure that the product you use for exfoliation is designed for daily use. *This is important!*

Product Suggestions:

Daily Superfoliant. This highly-active resurfacer delivers your smoothest skin ever, and helps fight the biochemical and environmental triggers known to accelerate skin aging. The advanced powder formula activates upon contact with water, releasing powerful enzymes, skin-smoothing alpha hydroxy acids and anti-pollution technology. Activated Binchotan Charcoal purifies the skin, helping to adsorb environmental toxins from deep within the pores, while Niacinamide, Red Algae and Tara Fruit Extract help guard against the damaging effects of pollution. Not recommended for users of medically-prescribed exfoliation products. (via Dermologica.)

On Moisturizers…

DO: Use a moisturizer. Oily skin can suffer from dehydration, which is lack of water. However, it is important to make sure that the moisturizer is oil-free.

DON’T: Moisturize morning and night. Now, disclosure: I am not a doctor… I’m just sharing with you what has worked for me. For me, I find that moisturizing at night is most effective. And, at night, I slather it on!

Product Suggestions:

During the day, to help combat my oil-slick skin, I love Dermologica Oil Control Lotion. Feather-light lotion to hydrate while reducing shine. Use in conjunction with MediBac Clearing product to help combat shine and maintain an all-day matte finish. A purifying blend of Meadow Sweet helps regulate excess oil production. Help clear congested follicles with Salicylic Acid as Enantia Chlorantha Bark Extract induces a long-term decrease in sebum without overdrying skin. Naturally-antiseptic Camphor, Balm Mint and Licorice Root cool and calm inflammation. (via Dermologica.)

During the night, I use Dermologica Pure Night. Restore skin luminosity and maximize PowerBright TRx™ results with this rich, nighttime moisturizer. It
helps reduce the appearance of brown spots and uneven skin tone while you sleep with an active blend of skin-brightening agents. Oligopeptide, brightening Vitamin C, Niacinamide and Zinc Glycinate help control melanin (pigment) formation and hyperpigmentation, while Pumpkin enzyme smooths the skin. Cranberry and Raspberry Seed oils help restore critical barrier lipids, optimizing
skin hydration and reducing the appearance of fine dehydration lines. White Bird of Paradise Seed Extract helps increase skin luminosity while collagen-stimulating Vitamin C and Moth Bean Seed Extract fight signs of aging. (via Dermologica.)

On Breakouts…

DO: Treat them! I mean, it’s embarrassing that at the age of *cough* 32 *cough* I’m still struggling with breakouts like a teenager going through puberty… thanks a lot, oily skin! I can’t walk around with pimples all over my face! And I’m definitely starting to see changes in my skin, due to my inability to find the Fountain of Youth… ugh, can I say it again: the struggle is real!!!

DON’T: Pick! Don’t pick, don’t pick, don’t pick! The struggle is real… as a habitual and ashamed picker, I get it… However, refrain yourself. By picking you are transferring more bacteria to your face, which will lead to more breakouts… and picking can lead to scarring! Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Product Suggestions…

Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2. This product does not claim to be for oily skin or breakouts… but it was recommended to me after a facial recently for the hormonal breakouts I was experiencing on my jawline, and I swear to you it has helped clear me up! Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 is an anti aging cream formulated with a maximized concentration of lipids: 2% pure ceramides, 4% natural cholesterol, and 2% fatty acids. This unique lipid correction cream contains the first 2:4:2 cholesterol-dominant ratio to help restore skin's external barrier and support natural self-repair, while potently nourishing aging skin for improvement in the visible appearance of skin smoothness, laxity, pores, and overall radiance. (via Skinceuticals.)

On Primers…

DO: Use one. It can seem that you are piling layers upon layers of product to your face, which makes you fear will lead to breakouts… but, controlling the oil helps control the clogged pores which controls the breakouts.

DO: Use an eyeshadow primer, to prevent your shadow from creasing throughout the day.

Product Suggestions…

BECCA Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. It’s literally the only primer I’ve ever used that actually keeps up with my oil production. I’m obsessed. This primer specifically targets oil-prone areas and acts as liquid blotting paper to leave your skin matte and fresh all day. (via BECCA.)

MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Paint Pot. I love the color “Painterly”... Yep, I even have oily eyelids! Ugh! This creamy long-wearing eyeshadow (that I use as an eyeshadow primer) blends smoothly over lids and does not crease or streak.

On Sun Protection…

DO: protect yourself. Every single day. Whether the sun shines or not. Always protect yourself! As a woeful oily woman, oil-free products are a requirement… and some incredible ones exist.

DON’T: believe that sunscreed leads to breakouts. You must protect your skin!

Product Suggestions…

Skinceuticals Physical Eye UV Defense, SPF 50. Delivering a new standard in eye care, this ophthalmologist-tested sunscreen defends, enhances, and optimizes the entire eye area, including the eye lid. Formulated specifically for the unique structure of the thinner and more sensitive skin around the eye, Physical Eye UV Defense provides broad spectrum SPF 50 protection without migrating into and irritating the eyes. A unifying tint enhances skin tone while ceramides nourish, creating a smooth, optimal canvas for makeup application. (via Skinceuticals)

Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense, SPF 50. This mattifying 100% physical sunscreen is formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (Z-Cote®*) to provide high broad spectrum UV protection. Enhanced with aerated silica technology, it is proven to maintain a matte finish even in hot, humid conditions. Its weightless mousse texture dries to a powder finish, optimizing makeup application. (via Skinceuticals.)

On Touch-Ups…

DO: Use a finishing powder to help soak up your oil throughout the day, and to reset your foundation after blotting.

DON’T: Keep caking on more and more powder foundation to cover the shine. Your skin needs to breathe, doll! Otherwise you’re leading to more and more breakouts!

Product Suggestions…

Truly worthy of a “changed my life” claim: Dollup Beauty’s Wonder Powder HD Finishing Powder. This finishing powder really does wonders at keeping my shine at bay and my skin looking matte for hours! Not to mention, it’s a “must” for all of those Instagram selfies! #flawless ;)
